When we are an 'emotional eater' , we turn to food to cope with stress, anxiety, difficult feelings, loneliness and boredom. 

 

  • We have a disagreement with our partner and the next thing we have eaten a whole tub of ice cream

  • We are feeling bored and we eat a packet of Oreo's.

  • We have had a tough day at work and head to the fridge - the next thing we have eaten most of that left over cheesecake

  • We look like we are going well on our new eating plan  we 'sneak' food when no- one is looking

 

How many times as a child were you told not to cry and given a biscuit or other treat to help you feel better?

Eating was our way of being loved, food was available when no-one else was.

Women Trauma and Weight Gain 

 

Many women live for decades, not knowing that their health struggles, weight struggles & relationship struggles are a result of unhealed trauma.

Recent research done by Columbia University's School of Public Health and Harvard's School of Public Health have confirmed what many of us working in the healing professions have known for some time: Trauma has a profound affect on the health of the physical body.

If you have experienced past trauma - emotional, physical, verbal or sexual - then you are going to respond by developing survival skills .... and for some women that means eating and weight gain.

There are many forms of trauma - it could be rape, sexual abuse, verbal abuse, violence, childhood illness, the death of a spouse, bullying at school or work, long term unemployment, divorce or a break-up.

Food offers comfort and a temporary escape , it's a way to numb our feelings and to experience relief from stress, bad memories, shame, or guilt.

When weight gain happens as a defense mechanism, no amount of dieting or exercising will work.

Typically when someone who has gained weight as a response to trauma starts a diet, they eventually hit a plateau and self-sabotage and put the weight back on - over and over again - until they deal with the past.

 

You see. your body needs the protection of the extra weight, because in some way it helps you to feel safe.

 

 

We form a cushion between us and the world -

it's a bit like wrapping ourselves up in bubble wrap.

But Trauma does not have to mean a lifetime of weight gain

While we cannot change the actual experience of something that has happened in the past, we can change how the experience is structured in our brain and therefore how the memory when recalled, is experienced.

You will find the techniques I use are extremely gentle and that do not need you to go over the traumatic incident again and again and the results are lasting and permanent. (Many people with trauma have been treated with 'talk therapy' which drags them back through the experience again and re-traumatizes them; a highly unpleasant thing to have to do. This does not happen in my practice and most of the time I do not even need to know the details of what happened to you).
